SERVANTHOOD

By Troy Taibi

 The Greek Word “Doulos” literally means someone who has voluntarily subjected himself to another persons will; a bond slave who could be free if they desired or Wholly subservient to another, because of their intense love for that person.

Phil. 2.5-7 “Let this mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men

Since we are told to follow in the Master’s footsteps, we should serve one another in love and in so doing fulfill the law by loving your neighbor as yourself (Gal. 5:13,14).  In other words, with respect and honor - out of love and reverence to the Lord - you are no longer slaves but free to serve God by serving one another.

1John 4.20 states that you are a liar if you say you love God whom you can’t see and hate your brother whom you can see.  The same principle holds true if you say you are a servant of God but serve not your brother or sister whom you can see! Real love is not only in word, but also in deed and truth and is evident by your actions.  Just as Jesus laid down his life for us, so we too should lay down our lives for the brethren.

You are to move in this world by:

1.     Serving God;

2.     Serving one  another and

3.     Serving people to whom you share the message of salvation.

He that is the greatest among you shall be your servant.  As He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death even death by crucifixion, we too must humble ourselves by daily taking up our cross and dying to the flesh. Only then can we leave behind our fallen nature (sin) and find the path that leads to life (Holiness) in God.  Our new nature will lead us to a death walk following in the footsteps of the greatest Servant our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
